In Ireland experienced and inexperienced hikers alike will find their pace and place of pleasure. Rugged cliffs challenge the most skilled hiker while gentle grades present the beginner with a field to test ability and endurance. Hiking and walking tours are the ideal way to see this magnificent country. There are several guide services for hire and most offer a package variety of tours.
Guided Tour Holidays
These services offer a map which is marked by grades, mild, moderate and challenging so the hiker is always sure of the terrain. Guides are with your group throughout the holiday which usually lasts for seven days but can be longer. Eight to fourteen people comprise a guided tour group. Most tour packages include airport luggage transfers, food and entertainment.
On the longer guided tours you can expect to see shimmering, rugged waves slapping on the shore at Donegal, while ancient castles greet you along the route at Galway and Mayo. You might explore the flat placid coast of Dingle, and look down from the mountains at the majestic sea line of the Celtic Kerry footsteps near Tralee. But no tour would be complete without a walk past the Burren Mini-break near Lisdonnvarna.
Independent Tour Holidays
Independent hiking tours are occasionally available. This service provides a route, luggage transfers and accommodations but leaves you free to explore on your own for seven to ten days. Highlights of this vacation might include Kerry Way, Dingle Way and West Cork.
Solo Holidays
Another hiking adventure is the solo tour. If you travel alone but want guided tour enmities then the solo, or singles, tour may be for you. It is a great way to make new friends and see the countryside. There are generally eight to twelve people in this group, all singles, and it lasts seven days.
Women Only Tour Holidays
Women who prefer to share their holiday with other women can find a gender specific opportunity. Again it has all the benefits of a guided tour. Some of the adventure in this tour may include the historic walk along Kerry Way, views of the spectacular Irish coastline of Dingle Bay and a boat trip to the Great Skelling Island which was once inhabited by 8th Century Irish monks.
Short Break Tours
Short break torus are popular with mature people. They last only four to five days and each walk can be started from the accommodations of your own guesthouse. One such holiday is based in the charming village of Glenbeigh in County Kerry and includes a walk through the Killarney National Park. At night you can enjoy the taste of Irish whiskey while listening to traditional Celtic music. The next morning is another walk in a different direction.
Other Options
Some tour places offer to drop you off at certain destinations and pick you up at others. One of the most popular hiking destinations is the Mountains of Mourne, which are widely recognized as some of the most awe inspiring scenery in Ireland. The Rathlin Island off Ballycastle in the north east of Ireland is a wonderful place for bird watching. The Ring of Kerry offers a wide range of walking from mild to difficult.
Maps and travel routes are available from many sources if you don't wish to be in a guided tour situation and camping gear can be rented at local stores in the cities.
